My First Blog

Creating a blog is something I never though I would do. I have always possessed the notion that blogs were primarily used by thirteen-year-old girls expressing how much they loved a guy in their science class or how unfair and cruel her parents are. Then there was the first day of Dr. Leake’s writing class. After he had instructed us to create a blog, I was a bit disturbed because of my preconceived beliefes of what blogging was. That night I browsed the Internet for some highly followed blogs and realized educated individuals blog about scholarly topics including my personal favorites: politic, economics, technology, and so on. I also enjoyed reading the debates posted about various heated topics- mostly the current debt situation. Through my first skimming of the vast world of blogging, I have learned that it is really a lot like social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. People post things about their daily life, but they also post things about current worldly issues that spark debate and conversation. There is also a connection between writing in general and blogging. Blogging seems to be an emotionally charged almost journal-like style of writing that, at its core, seems to play an important role in society. Ideally, Blogging is a way to communicate news and facts intertwined with personal belief, though idealism tends not to be reality.
I see problems with things like blogging, Facebook, and Twitter. There are numerous posts that are misguiding and flat out false in their claims, something that I do not enjoy having to read through. When someone speaks things to an audience and he or she is presenting false information, people can correct that information, and often times those false claims never venture beyond the minds of the people who have listened. With blogs that information is on the internet forever, and many people who may not realize what they are reading is false may fall into the trap set by the writer either intentionally or, most likely, unintentionally. This clearly leads to problems.
However, my overall opinion is that blogs are a good stepping-stone towards making people informed citizens and more globally aware. I think I will enjoy the experience of blogging.
